What happens between drop-off and delivery
A credible appraisal is a documented chain of reasoning behind a number. Here is how yours is produced.
- 1
Consultation & intake
We discuss the purpose of the appraisal (insurance, estate, legal or resale), because the intended use determines which value definition applies. You receive a written scope of work and fee quote before anything is signed.
- 2
Secure receipt of your items
Items are received by appointment or by insured, tracked shipment. Each piece is photographed, weighed and logged against a signed take-in receipt the moment it enters our custody.
- 3
Gemological examination
Full bench examination under magnification: stone identification, measurement and estimated weight, clarity and color grading, treatment detection, metal testing, hallmark and maker research, condition and construction notes.
- 4
Market research & valuation
Comparable sales are researched in the market relevant to the intended use, whether that is the replacement, secondary or auction market. The value conclusion is then reconciled and documented so a third party can follow the reasoning.
- 5
Report delivery & return
You receive a signed, dated report with photography, full descriptions, methodology, limiting conditions and appraiser credentials, delivered as a digital PDF with a bound original. Items are returned in person or by insured courier.
