How is an appraisal different from a diamond grading report?

A grading report from a laboratory identifies and grades a stone. An appraisal identifies the entire piece, states an intended use, and concludes a value in a defined market. Insurers require the appraisal; the grading report is supporting evidence.

Why can't I use the receipt from the jeweler?

A receipt records what you paid, not what the item would cost to replace today, nor its fair market value. Insurers, courts and the IRS require a value conclusion supported by a documented methodology from a qualified appraiser.

How are your fees calculated?

Accepted Answer

Flat fee per item, or an hourly professional rate for complex collections and legal work. Fees are never a percentage of appraised value. That is a conflict of interest. You receive a written quote before work begins.

How long does an appraisal take?

Most single-item insurance appraisals are completed in three to five business days. Estate and fair-market-value work typically takes five to seven. Large collections and litigation engagements are scheduled individually.

Do I have to leave my jewelry with you?

For most work, yes. A proper examination requires the item under magnification, on the scale and off the finger. Items are logged against a signed take-in receipt, held securely, and insured while in our custody. Some consultations can be completed while you wait.

Can you appraise items I bought abroad or inherited?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Inherited and imported pieces are a large share of our work, including items with no documentation at all. We research hallmarks, maker's marks, period construction and materials to build the record from scratch.

How often should an appraisal be updated?

Accepted Answer

Every two to three years for insurance purposes, or sooner after significant market movement in gold, platinum or the specific gem material. Estate and legal valuations are tied to a specific effective date and are not updated.

Is an appraisal the same as an offer to purchase my jewelry?

Accepted Answer

No. An appraisal provides a professional opinion of value for a specific intended use. It is not automatically an offer to purchase the item. Every appraisal is developed for its stated purpose using appropriate research, professional judgment, and clearly defined assignment conditions. Any relevant prior business relationship or financial interest will be disclosed when required.

Can you appraise my jewelry at my home or office?

Yes. The UGA Luxury Concierge Appraisal Service brings the appointment to your home or place of business. We arrive with portable equipment to examine, photograph, measure, and document your jewelry on location, and eligible pieces receive a complimentary basic cleaning. The location needs to offer a clean, secure, well-lit workspace with access to electricity. Availability, travel fees, minimums, and geographic restrictions may apply.

Does UGA arrange jewelry insurance?

UGA can help you organize the documentation commonly requested when applying for jewelry insurance and point you toward an appropriate application process when one is available. UGA Labs is not an insurance company and does not issue, bind, guarantee, or approve coverage. Policy terms, premiums, exclusions, and effective dates are determined by the insurance provider.

Completely. Client identities, item details, photography and report contents are never disclosed to third parties without your written authorization, except where compelled by law.
